Zesttee's 6 Step Blood Collection Manual for Cholesterol

How to Collect Blood Spot Sample for Cholesterol Test

Make sure to register your kit at zesttee.com/kit before you proceed.

Step 1

Make sure to complete the test requisition form and sign it. Without your signature, we cannot perform the testing.

Step 2

Open your collection card on a flat surface, and write your name (make sure it matches your registration!) and the collection date. This informs the lab of whose sample they are processing.

Step 3

Choose your ring or pinkie finger and use the alcohol pad to wipe the fingertip clean. The recommended puncture site is slightly off the middle of the fingertip.

Step 4

Then, twist and pull the safety end off the lancet. Because the lancet will only activate once, make sure to keep your finger on a hard surface. To puncture, press the lancet down until you hear a click.

Step 5

Squeeze your finger, applying downwards pressure from the base of your finger toward the puncture site. Allow single, large blood drops to fall onto the collection square and make sure each drop lightly soaks in before applying the next. Continue adding drops until the blood has dispersed to the line indicated on the card. Once finished, cover your fingertip with a bandaid and leave the card open for 30 minutes so it dries completely.

Step 6

Place your sample into the biohazard bag and then into the green smartpac, and seal it. Make sure to write your address. Drop it off at any post box.

Collection Tips

  • Drink plenty of water prior to collecting your sample to ensure that you're hydrated.
  • Ensure your hands are warm by thoroughly rinsing your hands in warm water or showering. If you have calluses on your fingers, we suggest soaking your hands in warm water to soften the skin before collection.
  • Promote adequate blood flow by swinging your arms by your side or by exercising beforehand.
  • Many find it helpful to have someone assist them in the collection process.
  • Once your finger is punctured, wipe away the first drop of blood.
  • If you find that a drop is not forming, it's helpful to promote blood flow by massaging from your wrist down to your fingertip.
  • The additional lancets can be used if needed but it's recommended to choose a different finger.

What Not To Do

  • Do not rub or smear (allow full drops to form and gently fall onto the paper).
  • Do not use heat to assist drying.
  • Do not perform this test without fasting for 8-10 hours prior to collection. This is necessary for accurate results.
  • Please Note: Under no circumstances should you use materials other than the lancets included in your test kit.
