Suggested mechanisms for the lipid-lowering effects of Spirulina blue-green algae include free radical scavenging, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and increased enzymes activity. The compound C-phycocyanin isolated from blue-green algae inhibits cholesterol absorption and bile acid reabsorption.
