HOW Vitamin B-12 WORKS
Vitamin B-12 is required in one of the pathways for homocysteine (amino acid) metabolism. Evidence suggests elevated homocysteine levels might cause vascular damage, impaired vasodilation (blood vessel widening) due to reduced nitric oxide activity, increased oxidation and arterial deposition of low-density lipoproteins (LDL or bad cholesterol), increased platelet adhesiveness, and activation of the clotting cascade. Elevated homocysteine concentrations are possibly associated with other conditions such as developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), decreased cognitive function, impaired memory, Alzheimer's disease, and vascular dementia.
